The design thinking process What it is, how to use it, and what's next

what is design process

It explains how to apply Lean principles, such as removing waste, improving team efficiency, and shifting away from relying on a single expert. The book equips designers with the tools and strategies to create effective user experiences while optimizing their design process for speed and flexibility. UX (User Experience) and UI (User Interface) are crucial but distinct aspects of the design process.

They test them with flowing water, representing blood moving through the heart. They are challenged to decide on specific design requirements, such as heavy traction or extra cushioning, and then use different materials to create working prototype shoes that meet the design criteria. The TeachEngineering hands-on activities featured here, by grade band, exemplify the engineering design process.

How to nail user interviews in a UX, HCD or Design Thinking process – full guide

Unlike a more linear UX process, lean UX is focused first and foremost on user testing early and often. The data is then used to identify and create incremental improvements and solutions for a product. Once you have a good understanding of your users and a plan to move forward, it's time to start sketching out some ideas for how they’ll interact with your interface. This is where you'll start to think about things like the overall layout, navigation, and specific elements on each page. One popular method is customer journey mapping, which allows you to see the steps your users take as they interact with your product.

Having laid out the blueprint for your new product or feature, the next step is to fine-tune the details of the design and create a more lifelike model of how the product will look and function. Let’s imagine that the solution you’ve decided to pursue is a budgeting feature that you’ll add to an existing app. Based on the findings of your UX research, you’ll then identify the most pressing user problem that needs to be solved. This is known as the problem definition stage and it usually involves crafting a problem statement — a short summary of the problem you’re going to design a solution for. During the research phase, UX designers use a variety of different tools depending on their chosen research methods. You can learn about the most popular UX research tools and how they’re used here.

Involve users

It aims to maximize the performance of the product by finding the best configuration of design inputs (dimensions, orientation, engineering fits, etc.). Such initial designs serve as a starting point for further refinement in upcoming stages. When you use these methods, you can accurately assess the effectiveness of a UX design process.

These include lack of user involvement, insufficient research, misalignment with business goals and scope creep. First, ensure consistent user involvement throughout the design process. Conduct regular testing sessions and gather feedback to understand user needs and preferences. This approach helps you design solutions that truly resonate with the target audience.

The design must be easy to use, and allows people to move up the ramp easily and go down slowly. In this maker challenge, students follow the engineering design process and use water-absorbing crystals to create a bandage that can be used in a traumatic situation, like a car accident or hiking accident. Now that you have tons of ideas floating around, it’s time to create mockups. This stage is the part where you create layouts, experimental product design, prototype testing, and dive into product development (whether it’s a new or existing product).

Repetition is necessary if there are obstacles in establishing buy-in. The outcome of each phase should be sound enough to serve as a guiding principle throughout the rest of the process and to ensure that you never stray too far from your focus. New designers (especially in a school setting), when taught the design process, treat it like law. They force the process, slow down development, and have little empathy for the people they work with.

The following techniques can assist us in the creation of a clear picture of a user’s motivations, behavioral patterns, and goals. Thanks to this, we will be able to consider a product from the users’ perspective, to understand them better and eventually to create a user-oriented design decision. Asking questions, we need to get all the necessary information about the project, understand how our product differs from competitors and what value users get from it. Here is the list of questions that will help us to understand a project and its business goals better.

Every step helps ensure the final product not only meets but exceeds user expectations. If teams adhere to this structured approach, they can deliver high-quality user interfaces that are both functional and appealing. Insurance firm MassMutual used a design thinking approach to tackle the challenge of getting young adults to purchase life insurance. In partnership with IDEO, they conducted extensive user research over the course of two years. Based on what they learned, they then embarked on a further two years of prototyping and testing.

On the surface, design thinking frameworks look very different—they use alternative names and have different numbers of steps. In the diverging “Discover” phase, designers gather insights and empathize with users’ needs. The team then converges in the “Define” phase to identify the problem. The methodology emphasizes collaboration and a multidisciplinary approach throughout each phase to ensure solutions are innovative and deeply rooted in real human needs and contexts.

While some states consider tiny or small houses an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), others like California, Colorado, Oregon, Florida, Texas, and more, have highly flexible zoning and building codes. These regulations allow small house floor plans as a traditional, single-family unit. These professionally drawn tiny house plans come with drawings, designs, and more to help you build this simple (yet attractive) 1,377-square-foot modern cottage. With its open kitchen design, two bedrooms, one bathroom, and spacious back deck, this tiny house could quickly become the place you call home. The limited style space allows designers to exercise great creativity to design a functional living space.

15 Tiny House Communities That Are as Efficient as They Are Charming

And for tiny home plans under 1,000 square feet, check out our tiny house plans. The idea of “simple house plans” is merely a blanket term to cover many different architectural designs that oftentimes have simple floor plans. There isn’t one specific style of home that calls to be “simpler” or “easier to build.” With that being said, there are certain floor plans that are more builder-friendly and affordable.

Are smaller homes cheaper? What is the most affordable style of home to build?

As you step into this stylish house, you’ll enter the 18’x13′ great room. It shares the same space with an 18’x12′ kitchen which lacks an island, giving you the option to put a table with chairs at its center instead. The interiors of a small house are as open to interpretation as the exteriors. If there are hallways, these spaces include furniture that can double up or provide a functional transition. With a heated interior of 650 square feet, this 2-bedroom, 1 bath cabin is the perfect size for a guest house or a weekend getaway cabin.

A common practice is to opt for a small to medium-sized house plan with the intention to expand the living space after several years. Ask the seller if you can add several rooms in the future to the existing plan. They will be able to give you more details and exact measurements of the modifications. On the left side of this home, you will find the 16’x12’6″ master bedroom.

The 19’8″x15’6″ great room is large enough for you to set up a dining table and invite guests. They will love the food you prepare in the 19’8″x13′ kitchen, which comes with an island that also acts as an eating bar. There’s also a 4’8″x7’2″ walk-in closet included where you can store your wardrobe.

Look for large windows, inviting as much natural lighting as possible into the space, and high, vaulted ceilings that provide the illusion of more space. Despite the smaller square footage, homeowners don't have to compromise on popular, highly sought-after features in modern architecture. You'll still find clean lines and minimalism in most modern small house plans. Their inherent creativity means you can choose any style of home and duplicate it in miniature proportions. Colonial style designs, for example, lend themselves well to the tiny house orientation because of their simple, rectangular shape. There is some overlap with contemporary house plans with our modern house plan collection featuring those plans that push the envelope in a visually forward-thinking way.

Due to the simple fact that these homes are small and therefore require less material makes them affordable home plans to build. Other styles of small home design available in this COOL collection will include traditional, European, vacation, A-frame, bungalow, craftsman, and country. Making a small home design for work for your family comes down to whether you’re willing to take charge of a floor plan’s details. You’ll need to choose interior furniture and make design choices that will power up your living spaces and make them multi-functional.

You can set up a small store, park your RV or even start a home-run business. There is a total living space of just 896 square feet which makes this barndominium an ideal addition on a farm. Here you will find plenty of space and the decoration is done to your liking. These downloadable plans include all the files you’ll need to build this inviting one-story tiny house with additional attic space. The 749-square-foot house has an open concept living room and kitchen, one bedroom, and two bathrooms on the main level.

Traditional house plans hold all the character and charm of the past with all the conveniences of the future. We offer a wide variety of small home plans, including one- and two-story layouts in all architectural styles. Many include open-concept living spaces, flexible bonus spaces, and options for attached and detached garages to help them adapt to different needs. At Architectural Designs, we define small house plans as homes up to 1,500 square feet in size.

When looking for a simple house plan, there are some key aspects to look for. One of the more desirable things about simpler houses is their open floor plans. Open floor plans are simpler to build as they require fewer materials and are more energy efficient than traditional closed floor plans. Many Modern styles such as Modern Farmhouse, Ranch, and Barndominium typically have open floor plans. While you could purchase a DIY home kit, these tiny house floor plans enable you to build a more unique and memorable home with greater customization options to match your preferences.

This simple 2x4 bench from Construct 101 is a project you could probably complete in a day. It comes with build drawings, materials and cut lists, and step-by-step instructions with illustrations. The only drawback to the materials list is that it lists the number of boxes of screws you will need instead of the number of screws. Make sure to double check that your count is accurate before heading to the hardware store. There’s also a reclined 2x6 bench plan from Rogue Engineer that comes with drawings, a materials and tools list, and illustrated instructions. If you’d rather have a couch than a bench, you can try your hand at building this outdoor sofa from Angela Marie Made.

When building a home, some costs can vary depending on what house plan you intend to build. Choosing a smaller, simpler floor plan can cut down some costs because you’re using fewer materials and have less square footage to cover. Choosing a simple house plan can help cut down on the time to build your home- potentially allowing you to build your home in 3 months. Oftentimes, builders will give estimates for how much a plan will cost per square footage; building a plan with less square footage can ultimately make it less expensive to build. It’s always beneficial to research the cost of building in your desired location before coming to a quick conclusion. Small house plans are architectural designs for homes between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet.

Setting Up a Factorial Experiment Research Methods in Psychology

mixed factorial design

For example, looking only at the no shoes vs. shoes conditions we see the following averages for each subject. We have usually no knowledge that any one factor will exert its effects independently of all others that can be varied, or that its effects are particularly simply related to variations in these other factors. With at least one shared wall between dwellings, our multi-family home designs provide separate accommodations for each household.

Non-Manipulated Independent Variables

Equal status research is most easily conducted when a research team is composed of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed researchers, interacts continually, and conducts a study to address one superordinate goal. Although this distinction is useful in some circumstances, we do not advise to apply it to every mixed methods design. First, Morse and Niehaus contend that the supplemental component can be done “less rigorously” but do not explain which aspects of rigor can be dropped. In addition, the idea of decreased rigor is in conflict with one key theme of the present article, namely that mixed methods designs should always meet the criterion of multiple validities legitimation (Onwuegbuzie and Johnson 2006). We have three factors, A, B, C, and before when we talked about Latin squares, two of these were blocking factors and the third was the treatment factor. We could estimate all three main effects and we could not estimate any of the interactions.

The Past, Present and Future of Factorial Survey Experiments: A Review for the Social Sciences

When an experiment includes multiple dependent variables, there is again a possibility of carryover effects. For example, it is possible that measuring participants’ moods before measuring their perceived health could affect their perceived health or that measuring their perceived health before their moods could affect their moods. So the order in which multiple dependent variables are measured becomes an issue. One approach is to measure them in the same order for all participants—usually with the most important one first so that it cannot be affected by measuring the others. Another approach is to counterbalance, or systematically vary, the order in which the dependent variables are measured. One sort of complexity mentioned was multilevel designs, but there are many complexities that can enter designs.

MER as One-Way Repeated Measures ANOVA

But in many ways, the complex design of this experiment undertaken by Schnall and her colleagues is more typical of research in psychology. Fortunately, we have already covered the basic elements of such designs in previous chapters. In this chapter, we look closely at how and why researchers combine these basic elements into more complex designs. We start with complex experiments—considering first the inclusion of multiple dependent variables and then the inclusion of multiple independent variables. There is an interaction effect (or just “interaction”) when the effect of one independent variable depends on the level of another.

3.4. What makes a people hangry?¶

The between-subjects design is conceptually simpler, avoids carryover effects, and minimizes the time and effort of each participant. The within-subjects design is more efficient for the researcher and help to control extraneous variables. Since factorial designs have more than one independent variable, it is also possible to manipulate one independent variable between subjects and another within subjects.

Lesson 5: Introduction to Factorial Designs

Many of our design dimensions ultimately refer to different ways in which the qualitative and quantitative research components are interdependent. Different purposes of mixing ultimately differ in the way one component relates to, and depends upon, the other component. For example, these purposes include dependencies, such as “x illustrates y” and “x explains y”.

3.7. Interactions¶

In the bottom panel, independent variable “B” again has an effect at both levels of independent variable “A,” but the effects are in opposite directions. Figure 8.4 shows the strongest form of this kind of interaction, called a crossover interaction. One example of a crossover interaction comes from a study by Kathy Gilliland on the effect of caffeine on the verbal test scores of introverts and extraverts (Gilliland, 1980)[2].

Third, it is important to remember that causal conclusions can only be drawn about the manipulated independent variable. For example, Schnall and her colleagues were justified in concluding that disgust affected the harshness of their participants’ moral judgments because they manipulated that variable and randomly assigned participants to the clean or messy room. But they would not have been justified in concluding that participants’ private body consciousness affected the harshness of their participants’ moral judgments because they did not manipulate that variable. It could be, for example, that having a strict moral code and a heightened awareness of one’s body are both caused by some third variable (e.g., neuroticism). Thus it is important to be aware of which variables in a study are manipulated and which are not.

Manipulation checks are usually done at the end of the procedure to be sure that the effect of the manipulation lasted throughout the entire procedure and to avoid calling unnecessary attention to the manipulation. Manipulation checks become especially important when the manipulation of the independent variable turns out to have no effect on the dependent variable. Imagine, for example, that you exposed participants to happy or sad movie music—intending to put them in happy or sad moods—but you found that this had no effect on the number of happy or sad childhood events they recalled. This could be because being in a happy or sad mood has no effect on memories for childhood events.

mixed factorial design

The researcher would consider the main effect of sex, the main effect of self-esteem, and the interaction between these two independent variables. Such studies are extremely common, and there are several points worth making about them. First, nonmanipulated independent variables are usually participant variables (private body consciousness, hypochondriasis, self-esteem, and so on), and as such they are by definition between-subjects factors. For example, people are either low in hypochondriasis or high in hypochondriasis; they cannot be tested in both of these conditions. Second, such studies are generally considered to be experiments as long as at least one independent variable is manipulated, regardless of how many nonmanipulated independent variables are included.

Our recommendation is that readers examine multiple design typologies to better understand the design process in mixed methods research and to understand what designs have been identified as popular in the field. However, when a design that would follow from one’s research questions is not available, the researcher can and should (a) combine designs into new designs or (b) simply construct a new and unique design. One can go a long way in depicting a complex design with Morse’s (1991) notation when used to its full potential.

In the case of mixed methods, the component that corresponds to the theoretical drive is referred to as the “core” component (“Kernkomponente”), and the other component is called the “supplemental” component (“ergänzende Komponente”). In Morse’s notation system, the core component is written in capitals and the supplemental component is written in lowercase letters. For example, in a QUAL → quan design, more weight is attached to the data coming from the core qualitative component.

Also notice that each number in the notation represents one factor, one independent variable. So by looking at how many numbers are in the notation, you can determine how many independent variables there are in the experiment. 2 x 2, 3 x 3, and 2 x 3 designs all have two numbers in the notation and therefore all have two independent variables. The numerical value of each of the numbers represents the number of levels of each independent variable. A 2 means that the independent variable has two levels, a 3 means that the independent variable has three levels, a 4 means it has four levels, etc. To illustrate, a 3 x 3 design has two independent variables, each with three levels, while a 2 x 2 x 2 design has three independent variables, each with two levels.

It is difficult to provide guidelines for when the restricted or unrestricted mixed model should be used, because statisticians do not fully agree on this. Fortunately, the inference for the fixed effects does not differ for the 2 factor mixed model which is most often seen, and is usually the same in more complicated models as well. The key point here is that the Morse notation provides researchers with a powerful language for depicting and communicating the design constructed for a specific research study. In the case of an analytical point of integration, a first analytical stage of a qualitative component is followed by a second analytical stage, in which the topics identified in the first analytical stage are quantitized. The results of the qualitative component ultimately, and before writing down the results of the analytical phase as a whole, become quantitative; qualitizing also is a possible strategy, which would be the converse of this.

This is done to confirm that the independent variable was, in fact, successfully manipulated. For example, Schnall and her colleagues had their participants rate their level of disgust to be sure that those in the messy room actually felt more disgusted than those in the clean room. Since a 2-level design only has two levels of each factor, we can only detect linear effects.

As mentioned above, building a barndominium in California is much less expensive than building a home with traditional methods. The materials and labor take up a smaller portion of the budget since the construction itself is less complicated and takes less time in general. Because of this, it can be a much more accessible prospect than putting up the money for a wood frame and cement foundation home. The other advantage is that building a barndominium in California is generally much cheaper than building a traditional home.

This amazing structure combined our signature post and beam style with the influence of Orthodox Greek heritage and hand-painted murals to create a stunning interior. When space is at a premium, a loft area is a fantastic way to make the most of what you have. These barn owners used their loft to create a one-of-a-kind hobby space. They offer custom width/height breezeways, custom stalls, unique configurations and more. The cost to run these lines will largely depend on the distance from your property to the nearest line. If you purchase remote property, the cost to run utilities can be quite high, but you may find alternative options with solar power and satellite or cell internet.

Bedroom Rustic Two-Story Barndominium for a Wide Lot with Loft and Bonus Room (Floor Plan)

If finished, the basement would add 879 square feet of living space for a total of 3,021 square feet, an additional bathroom, a kennel area for your favorite furry friends, and a bunk room. Barndominiums come in a variety of sizes and layouts, from single story ranch style to multi story floor plans. Most barndominiums are used as single family residences but more recently families have been building them with dual purposes.

However, there is a great deal of them out there that have narrowed down their expertise to this type of building specifically. Because of that, they will be able to give you the benefit of their experience and make sure that you get a durable and well-built structure for your barndo. This home is so popular because it looks like it comes straight from a movie. It’s a great combination of an old-time farmhouse with all the modern elements of a new barndominium. One thing our clients love about it is that it makes the most of every single inch of space.

No one will be able to tell whether you built this home from the ground up or simply remodeled an existing barn to suit your needs. There is room for three cars, or two cars and a tractor, or one car and a boat. Whatever your needs may be, this garage has the space and with both front and rear doors, it makes moving your cars around very easy. You can easily find a barndominium in all kinds of size categories.

A tower of seafood with oysters, shrimp, crab, and lobster. Normally we skip things like this at restaurants, but Shaw’s is the kind of place where you order the seafood tower. We appreciate Shaw’s for the right occasion, which can actually be any occasion as long as you’re willing to spend a bunch of money on seafood like oysters, crab legs, and sushi. It’s great for date night, dinner with family, or an all-out gathering of friends.

BAR PACKAGES

It’s the specialty here, and we usually have a plate of them on the table when going big in the dining room. Awesome shellfish in a basement dive bar complete with year-round Christmas lights. Crispy wonton shells with lobster, avocado, and an Asian vegetable salad. One minute you’re watching people get Slimed on Nickelodeon, and the next you’re trying to figure out how to contribute more than $0 to your 401K.

Menus

Located in the Streets of Woodfield in Schaumburg, Shaw’s Crab House provides the perfect setting for any event ranging from intimate gatherings, graduations, rehearsal dinners, engagement parties. Birthday celebrations, bridal and baby showers, funeral memorials & receptions to corporate meetings or large events up to 200 guests. Our private dining menus feature a variety of fresh fish & seafood, prime steaks, signature sides & homemade desserts.

Raw Bar

And while it’s nice, there are also often random tourists wandering in off the streets in their finest Hawaiian or I ❤️ Chicago shirts. Being locals, this means Shaw’s falls off our radar at times. Shaw’s Crab House is a Chicago institution that boasts a selection of seafood with a longstanding commitment to offering top quality ingredients since 1984. Working directly with fishermen and farmers, Shaw’s sources daily catches flown in from coast-to-coast. With an ethos of spotlighting ingredients first, Shaw’s menu features simple preparations executed to perfection to allow quality to take center stage.

One nice touch is fresh olive and pickle bar, featuring crunchy carrots, cauliflower and other pickled veg. Cooks will either slice the shawarma old school, with a thin, long serrated knife, or if it’s busy, they’ll pull out the electric shavers, which do the trick nicely. The vertical spits are clearly the stars at Hello Shawarma, wedged between a Hello Hookah and a Hello Thai in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it mall along south Harlem Avenue.

Lunch Menu

Enjoy the traditional 1940s style seafood decor for your next charity event, wedding ceremony or exclusive corporate gathering. Seated or buffet stations available for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. Celebrate your next company holiday party or wedding reception in our East Coast style Oyster Bar. Reception space for up to 125 guests with a full Shaw’s buffet and bar. Located in the Oyster Bar, the Oyster Deck is surrounded by a half-wall making it entirely your space but still allowing you to be a part of the atmosphere of the Oyster Bar.

Kids Menu

You choose from lamb, beef or chicken, sliced fresh. Then, either stuffed into pitas or stacked into sandwiches or rolled up in thin, lavash-like wraps. Joe’s is consistently one of the best steakhouses in town, and you shouldn’t even order steak.

Shaw’s isn’t innovative or exciting with a constantly changing menu, but it’s comforting. You know exactly what you’ll get, and when you’re here that’s exactly what you want. The design – cast in a 1940’s style setting – has two dining rooms offering guests a dual experience between the more casual and lively Oyster Bar and the traditional white tablecloth Main Dining Room. Cold Storage is seafood bar attached to a steakhouse.

The flexibility of the Normandie Rooms makes this space a perfect fit for any event from large corporate receptions or award luncheons to rehearsal dinners or post wedding brunches. As a whole the space can accommodate up to 110 guests but they can also be separated into smaller spaces which accommodate up to 22 or up to 50 guests. “The round sesame bread, which is our signature, it’s called the Bashka. We put bell peppers, mushrooms, corn, olives and it’s on the grill, with your preference of American cheese or pepperjack cheese,” he said.

The lively Oyster Bar features a convivial atmosphere with spacious booths lining the room and an abundance of high-top tables perfect for a drink and appetizer after work or a full dining experience with friends. With a wrap around wooden bar and bartenders that remember your name, Shaw’s Oyster Bar is the Chicago destination for a round of oysters on the half shell and a martini. Shaw’s sources daily catches flown in from coast-to-coast by working directly with fishermen and farmers. Shaw’s has an unbelievable buffet for around $59. There’s French toast, eggs benedict, Do-Rite donuts, oysters, sushi, crab claws, crab cakes, shrimp, and about 25 other things.

Post up at the bar for oysters and other fresh fish. Shaw’s is basically the seafood version of a steakhouse. It has big red leather booths, white tablecloths, and a wait staff dressed in black pants, white dress shirts, and black vests.

And that doesn’t even take into account a sweets table that’s nothing short of ridiculous. Pricey, yes, but worth it every now and then or for a special occasion. You 100% need them if you’re in the oyster bar, and you probably do in the dining room too. Available for full buyouts, up to 225 guests, or large party reservations, guests.

Exploring History and Culture: Victoria Mansion and Portland Museum of Art

The Ocean Gateway terminal serves all ferries connecting Maine USA with Nova Scotia (NS Canada). The decision was made after the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency threatened to close the terminal's customs service as it didn't meet USA's federal standards. Bay Ferries is a subsidiary of Northumberland Ferries Ltd (parent NFL Holdings Ltd) and is subsidized by the NS taxpayers. In 2017, the port reported a record year as the number of visiting cruise passengers for the first time ever exceeded 100,000. Port's statistics showed a 6% increase in passenger volumes and a 10% increase in crew numbers over 2016. In 2018, the port handled total 32 ship calls (23% over 2017) and around 39,000 passengers.

Whether you’re looking for fresh seafood or unique souvenirs, you’ll find it all within walking distance of the port. The terminals are located adjacent to Commercial Street, which runs alongside the waterfront and features restaurants, quaint shops and fishermen at work. A visitor information booth is located just outside the cruise terminal, where you can pick up city maps. The coastal New England port boasts a vibrant working waterfront, an abundance of Victorian-era architecture and numerous historic lighthouses. Nestled on a picturesque seascape, the city is perched on a peninsula jutting out into the island-studded Casco Bay, protected from the Atlantic Ocean.

With its compact size and walkable streets, exploring local attractions on foot can be an enjoyable experience for visitors. You can stroll along Commercial Street where you’ll find shops selling souvenirs and local crafts or take a leisurely walk through Eastern Promenade Park with stunning views of Casco Bay. One of the highlights of the museum is its outdoor shipyard, where visitors can watch craftsmen build wooden boats using traditional techniques.

Taxis wait outside the cruise terminal, and rideshare services operate in the city. You can explore beautiful Casco Bay on the local ferry service, Casco Bay Lines; ferries depart from their own terminal, around 15 minutes’ walk from where cruise ships dock. Located in the northeastern part of the United States, Portland Maine cruise port offers visitors stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding islands. The city’s charming cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and vibrant food scene make it a must-visit destination for any traveler.

The Ocean Gateway Terminal is a newer facility and has a visitor information center located inside the terminal. The port had once been a major shipbuilding center and one of the busiest fishing ports on the Atlantic. Unfortunately, this success also made the port a target for the British during the War of 1812.

Despite more business, costs have gone up, pushing the port’s container facility into the red. The container business directly creates 696 jobs, port officials said. Another estimated 870 indirect positions -- truckers, shippers and freight forwarders and brokers -- also rely on the local container business. Portland has plenty of nearby attractions that are worth exploring during your visit.

Portland is known for its fresh seafood, so be sure to try some of their famous lobster rolls or clam chowder. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something more casual, head to one of the city’s classic diners for a hearty burger or sandwich. This company offers lobstering tours where passengers can learn about the lobster industry in Maine and even help haul in traps. Lucky Catch also offers sightseeing cruises that explore Casco Bay’s many islands and coves.
